Fort DeSoto & the Spanish-American War

Fort DeSoto was established in 1898 as a coastal defense installation at the mouth of Tampa Bay, built specifically to protect the port from potential Spanish naval attack during the Spanish-American War. As the nation's primary embarkation point for the Cuba invasion, Tampa Bay was considered a priority target — and Fort DeSoto was the last line of defense at its entrance.

The fort sits on Mullet Key at the southern tip of Pinellas County, commanding a sweeping view of the Gulf of Mexico and the approaches to Tampa Bay. Its massive Endicott-era gun batteries were designed to stop enemy warships before they could reach the troop transport ships and supply lines at Port Tampa. In the event, the Spanish Navy never appeared — but the fort stood ready throughout the conflict.

A Park Born from the War

Fort DeSoto Park was created from the military reservation established during the Spanish-American War. The dedication of this memorial in 1963 — 65 years after the war — reflects the enduring significance of 1898 to the Tampa Bay area. The memorial's explicit inclusion of the Rough Riders connects this Pinellas County site directly to the Tampa story just across the bay.
